Heartland Green was founded in 2020 by the Tumeo family, who originate from Chisanga Ponde village in Mungwi District, Northern Province, Zambia. Our deep connection to the local community, where high levels of poverty have led to unsustainable forest practices, inspired us to take action. We recognized the urgent need for conservation and sustainable forest management to preserve the beautiful forests of Mungwi and improve the lives of local people.
Mungwi is home to vital natural forests that play a crucial role in carbon sequestration and climate mitigation. However, over the past decade, deforestation and forest degradation have led to significant carbon emissions in the region. In 2010, Mungwi had 176 square kilometres of natural forest, covering 18% of the district’s land area. By 2023, the district had lost 2.05 square kilometres of forest, releasing 644 kilotons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This loss highlights the urgent need for effective conservation and sustainable forest management practices.

Mungwi experiences a tropical climate with annual rainfall exceeding 1,000 millimetres and a growing season of 140 to 170 days, making it ideal for sustainable forest management and reforestation efforts. The region’s climate provides a perfect environment for implementing practices that can restore and protect its forests while combating deforestation.
Heartland Green is committed to reversing the trends of deforestation and land degradation in Mungwi. Through our conservation initiatives and sustainable forest management practices, we aim to protect the district’s forests, improve local livelihoods, and contribute to the fight against deforestation. Our work is focused on creating a sustainable future for both the people and the environment of Mungwi.
